Since its raining outside and cold and I should be doing grades.... what did happen at the school board meeting? I am at HS and repairs are bieng done and we have had no mention of moving or combining. I did hear of layoffs. No more information was forthcoming and promptly shut up when I asked to clarify, like the union rep said too much... but I am still in the dark about what is going on I found it amazing that, on the sup newsletter, she included pictures of all the new hires at Charleston.

Are they planning on more layoffs for the next year?

I heard there was a BOE meeting tonight at Southview. If so, was anyone out there in attendance? I would be interested in hearing what was said about combining the two high schools. Somebody, anybody. Is anyone out there?

I have heard rumblings that an on-site digital academy will be instituted at Southview. Meaning those kids who are unable to function in the general population will be taking their required high school coursework online from 2-6pm. I think this is a great idea! Has anyone else out there heard about this?

Hi, ya'll. I have a few pals who work at Longfellow and they have told me the exact same thing. This previous poster is totally right on when he/she suggests parents talk to Charleston, but I think more specifically they should call up the Superintendent or make an appointment to discuss their concerns about this situation with her face to face. Otherwise, nothing will change. What a mess!!

From an email:

...I think the public should be aware of how dangerous and poorly run Longfellow Middle School is. Yesterday there was a 7th grade student who attacked and attempted to stab a fellow student with a pair of large scissors. He had to be handcuffed since he refused to leave the classroom. This child was not arrested, and I do not believe the police were called. I know he was released to the custody of his father. Less than an hour later another student was handcuffed in the cafeteria.

There are a handful of students that constantly disrupt classes using profanity regularly. These students are infringing upon the rights of other students to learn. These students are disrespectful and in my opinion the administration is negligent in the handling of discipline at this school. There are areas in the school that are not monitored and are out of the line of vision of the teachers. It is likely that someone will be hurt.

The reason that I am emailing you, is that I thought maybe you could urge parents and concerned citizens to call Charleston and demand that control be taken by administration in the building. I do not want to post under my name because I fear my [redacted - sb] could suffer, [identifier redacted - sb] By the way this particular student earlier in the year, started taking his pants down to urinate in a potted plant in the art room. He has been extremely disruptive all year, there are teachers who refused to have him back in their class.

Thoughts?

I am new to the blogging world. I was riffed last summer and was called back last week. 16 years seniority with LCS. I will be so happy to be back but I feel like I am so out of the loop of things. Thanks to the blogs that I read, it kept me somewhat in touch. Thanks again, and I will certainly participate in this lounge.

I concur with MCThomas, yet I would give the semester a "D" because there has been some effort shown. One comment tho, MCThomas is right in stating "they" should get all items out prior to demolishment, but...because of the BOE's decision to limit elementary library staff, materials are walking away NOW! There is no one in elementary libraries full time, the materials sit, are not circulated as they were meant to be, and there is no media clerk full time to accomodate student and teacher needs in the elementary buildings on a full time basis. I am a laid off media clerk. The collection I worked so hard to create, over a span of 10 years, to reflect my building's student needs and the needs of its' teachers, is in chaos. Staffing elementary buildings haphazardly, is allowing thousands of dollars in books and materials to disappear. LCS states all students should be reading at grade level, but then take away the one resource it had in each building. Sending a mixed message, don't you think?

Incomplete! There are still changes happening that the public is unaware of. I am not seeing as open communications as was promised. I can only hope that the small strides forward get bigger and better. Hoping that when it comes time to "raze" the old buildings, we do not have a mountain of "things" sitting outside like at Longfellow. Let's conserve and be sure that we get all the books and things that other buildings and libraries can use BEFORE tear-down begins.

I do follow The Morning Journal and the LCS web site when I am away, just to keep up with what is happening. Hopefully, more people will respond to things happening instead of falling back into apathy. Some of the commenters are leaving the district so we may lose some of our most vocal folks. Let's keep accountability alive.

Thanks Roman, what's really really cool about this new set up is that - for right now - it is very lean and basically basic.

BBPress is an open source project, so the folks who are invested in developing this are continually making improvements to the code and functionality. Don't be surprised, that as they come available, that more user-friendly options are added to this forum.
